Do you have a good recipe for a classic old fashioned? I have tried 6 times with different variations I have found online and every time has been totally gross and cost me half a bottle of whiskey due to failed experimentation. :(
Hey Pavla! Old Fashioneds are my go-to drink because they really are so simple once you get the process down. The trouble is, there are so many ways to go about making this drink that I also had a little trouble getting it “just right” at home at first.
I think there are a couple keys to getting it right:
You need to like bourbon/whiskey (obviously). This drink is mostly straight booze so if you don’t like the spirit, there’s no covering up the flavor.
The trick for making an Old Fashioned at home is being patient. Ice is an ingredient not to be overlooked in the recipe, and you’ve got to give it some time to melt. That’s what will bring it all together.
Now that those basics are out of the way, we’re ready to build your cocktail! Here’s how you do it:
Put a sugar cube in your rocks glass and give it four shakes of Angostura bitters (or the bitters of your choice). Add a quick splash of water and muddle.
Fill your glass about 3/4 of the way with ice.
Add 2oz of bourbon/rye.
Using a spoon, stir everything together for 30-45 counts. If you are clumsy like me, you’ll make a mess of this repeatedly. I think the secret is to catch the topmost edge of the ice and just push it with your spoon, rather than stick the spoon straight down into your glass.
Now that your ice has melted down some, add more ice to fill out the glass.
Garnish with an orange peel and a cherry (I like the Morello cherries at Trader Joe’s). Make sure you peel that swath of orange right above the cocktail and then twist it a bit to bring out the oils. Swirl it around the inside and even the outer lip of the glass before you drop it in.
Let it sit for another minute or so and then taste. It should be good to go.
This Irish gentleman has more passion in his TK than your whole family does in its whole TK.
Notes for listening: -If Glen’s wail of ferocious passion is your thing, you want to listen to this. -If Glen’s wail of ferocious passion is not your thing, you want to reconsider your life choices and also not talk to me for 45+ seconds.
Auto Gingreblog and holy crap this album is good
This album is giving me FEELINGS. Plus, it reminds me of the time I went to a bar in Noho and Glen was playing alongside an Irish band (because, OF COURSE) for regular patrons. Man, that’s the kind of stuff I miss most about New York.
Every morning I tell myself, “Self, today is the day we do Pilates first thing and THEN get down to work.”
It’s like, if only I can do this one thing then everything else for my day will fall into place and it will be perfect and I will be functioning at my most productive level.
And then everyday I sit down to eat breakfast at my computer and get sucked into catching up on my dashboard, answering emails and then oh jeez! It’s 2:30 pm and I am still in my PJs at the computer, having crossed off much of my work to-do list.
But one of these days…one of these days I will do Pilates first thing in the morning and it will be the greatest day.
I have always been very open and honest about this part of my life with my friends, my family, and my colleagues. In a perfect world, I don’t think it’s anyone else’s business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted. I’m not an activist, but I am a human being and I don’t give that up by being a journalist.
This may be the official announcement, but the fact that Anderson is BFF with Kathy Griffin was always the real coming out announcement in my heart.
