Happy Hour: The Monkey Gland

  • 1 1/2 oz dry gin
  • 1 1/2 oz orange juice (fresh squeezed!)
  • 1/4 oz (1 tsp) real grenadine
  • 1/2 tsp absinthe

Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange peel if you’re feeling fancy.

I’ve been doing a little weekly get-together at our place, called “Experimental Happy Hour,” where I make one cocktail that I’ve been wanting to try and force my friends to try it too. In all, I made about 15 Monkey Glands last night - and they were a big hit!

You may notice on the chalkboard pic that the absinthe measurement is a bit smudgy. This is because the recipe originally called for a full teaspoon of absinthe, and I felt that it completely overpowered the drink. So, I halved the amount. Who said problem-solving can’t be fun!

Fun fact: The Monkey Gland is named for an early 20th century procedure that was touted for achieving anti-aging and Viagra-like effects. Seriously, this is some weird stuff, read the Wikipedia page for the surgeon who came up with this bizarre treatment.

Shout-out to Lynn at The Actor’s Diet for taking these pics.
